Today we are going to take a look at a more friendly option for our business in focus piece. I used to love laser tag as a child and have many fond memories of playing Quazar at my local Ten Pin bowling alley. Now it seems there is a place in Derby that has taken this experience to another level. So all you big kids (and regular ones) will probably enjoy reading all about this one.

HELiOS Pro Laser-Tag at Megazone: An Immersive Experience

HELiOS Pro Laser-Tag at Megazone is an action-packed futuristic laser-tag game played within a 4,000 sq. ft. multi-level arena, featuring labyrinths, mazes, swirling smoke, and some very eerie music that sets the tone and gets your heart racing. Super-bright green lasers pierce through the ultraviolet (UV) themed setting, creating an immersive environment where players, armed with only a laser gun, are tasked with surviving as they are hunted. It’s suitable for anyone aged six and above, though younger children may also enjoy the game. It’s worth having parents there for the younger ones as it could be a little scary for smaller children.

Events and Group Gatherings at Megazone

Megazone provides the perfect venue for a variety of events, including:

  • Birthday parties
  • Group outings for clubs, schools, and sports teams
  • Corporate team-building events
  • Family and friends gatherings
  • Student Activities
  • School holiday treats

Additional Facilities at Willows Sports Centre

Located within Willows Sports Centre in Derby, Megazone offers laser tag alongside indoor sports facilities, including football, futsal, cricket, and netball. The centre also has a fully licensed bar, lounge area, and changing rooms with hot showers and lockers. Parking is limited, so it is recommended to use nearby parking facilities during busy times.

Pre-Booking and Group Options

This place does get very busy, so Megazone encourages pre-booking, especially during weekends and school holidays due to the high demand. Groups can also book outside standard hours with prior notice, and this has been a known option for big kids and people at stag and hen parties. Trained, uniformed staff are always on hand to ensure your group’s safety and comfort, and first-aid employees are available as well, so you are always in a controlled environment. You and your party can just focus on the important part, shooting each other and having fun.

Party Food and Catering

Megazone provides a range of freshly prepared party food, including stone-baked pizza, chicken breast bites, fries, and unlimited squash or water. Dietary, allergen and cultural requirements can be catered for upon request.

Amerton Farm is a place I have frequented often as a child and have continued to do so into my mid-30s. I used to come here to pet the animals and marvel and the giant pig they had on site. Now though I go for another reason. The Food.

Amerton Farm Shop: Local Produce and Sustainability

Farm shops are known for producing quality produce and meat, and Amerton Farm is no different. At Amerton Farm Shop, food miles are a priority. This means that if the food isn’t produced on-site, then it’s still sourced as locally as possible to provide customers with a fresh quality product from Staffordshire or within a 40-mile radius, including nearby counties.

This approach supports sustainability, ensuring the local economy thrives and recycling efforts are maintained, which in this day and age is a criterion all businesses are having to take seriously.

Local Products at Amerton Farm Shop

They have some wonderful food items to offer, such as:

  • Ice Cream from Red Lion Farm, Haughton
  • Oatcakes from Poveys, Biddulph
  • Crisps from Mr Trotters, Rugeley and Tyrells, Herefordshire
  • Bottled water from Much Wenlock and Cheshire Water
  • Preserves, jams & marmalades under the Amerton Farm own label, Cottage Delight, Leek, and Mrs. Darlington, Crewe
  • Cheese from Staffordshire Cheese Company
  • Milk & cream from Wheat Bros, Cheadle
  • Eggs from Sam’s Eggs, Croxden, Uttoxeter
  • Fruit cordials from Belvoir Fruit Farms, Leicestershire
  • Applesecco from Oldfields, Worcestershire

Beverages Selection

The food hall also carries an impressive range of beverages:

  • Beers from Titanic Brewery, Burslem; Slaters Brewery, Stafford; Leek Brewing Company Ltd, Cheddleton; Backyard Brewhouse, Walsall; Salopian Brewery, Shropshire
  • Lagers from Freedom Brewery, Abbots Bromley
  • Cider from Lyme Bay Winery, Devon
  • Wine from Clive’s Wines, Burntwood
  • Gins & vodkas from Two Birds, Leicester and Excelsior, Tamworth

Additional Noteworthy Products

Other notable products include:

  • Rapeseed oil from Just Oil, Hill Ridware
  • Honey from P Bell, Eccleshall and Cottage Delight, Leek
  • Mayonnaise, chutneys, and mustards from Stokes Ess Foods, Suffolk
  • Liqueurs from Scottish Liquor Centre, Bankfoot, Perthshire

Dining at Amerton Farm

A restaurant is also on hand to serve customers, providing delicious hot and cold options for patrons. All meals are freshly cooked to order, and though this may occasionally result in longer waiting times during busy periods, the freshness and quality are guaranteed, so it’s well worth the wait.

Final Thoughts: A Place for Families and Foodies

Amerton Farm is a great place to take families or foodies, and as a patron for many years myself, I 100% recommend a visit.

The town of Stafford is a quaint place, surrounded by woodland areas and plenty of farmland and fields. It has expanded a bit since my youth, but I still have a lot of fond memories of my hometown. Today we will feature one of the town’s oldest institutions, the Soup Kitchen.

A Family Business

The first thing about this establishment that stands out is its fantastic location. It’s situated right at the top of Church Lane, overlooking the magnificent St Mary’s Church.

The Soup Kitchen is very much a family-run business and its current proprietor has been taking care of its valued customers for over thirty years. Managed by the Sandy family, the café takes pride in serving freshly cooked, homemade meals and of course is an excellent place to grab a slice of cake and a tea or a coffee.

The rooftop garden is a favourite spot of mine and a place that makes me think back fondly of my youth. I spent many a Saturday here drinking tea on the terrace as a young boy with my family and friends, and the terrace has improved significantly since then as well which is a nice touch.

An Idyllic Setting

The Soup Kitchen provides a peaceful setting to relax while enjoying breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, or afternoon tea. They have a dedicated bake house team turning out fresh pastries, cakes, and other treats throughout the day, and the café offers both table and self-service options which can be beneficial to those folk who have a little less time on their hands.

This truly is one of the most radical places to grab a bite to eat and drink in Staffordshire, and the service here is excellent too. There is a reason it has remained open for so many years and I can’t see that changing anytime soon.

The bakery has set its sights on 16 Angel Row, a Grade II listed building in Nottingham city centre, originally constructed around 1800 as a townhouse before transitioning to commercial use.

Plans for the Nottingham store include significant renovations to the historic building. Insomnia Cookies aims to create a welcoming customer space, installing new fascia boards and signage on the exterior. Inside, they will replace existing finishes with fire-resistant materials and make updates such as new customer seating and kitchen facilities for baking their signature cookies.

The building, which has been vacant since its last occupant, Game, relocated in 2018, will be transformed into Insomnia Cookies’ latest venture. The bakery has applied for a licence to operate from 10 am to 5 am, seven days a week, offering customers warm cookies, cakes, and beverages.

With over 260 locations, mainly across the US and Canada, Insomnia Cookies is best known for delivering freshly baked cookies to doorsteps. The Nottingham store will be its fourth UK location, following three outlets in Manchester, with another set to open in Sheffield.

This expansion is part of Insomnia Cookies’ continued growth, bringing its late-night cookie delivery service to more corners of the UK.

Santiago, established in 2021 in Buxton, Derbyshire, is a family-run business that blends a restaurant, bar, shop, and delicatessen into one cohesive experience celebrating authentic Spanish cuisine. Drawing inspiration from over 20 years of family holidays in Spain, particularly in San Pedro del Pinatar, the owners seek to recreate the essence of Spain’s culinary and social culture.

Target Market and Concept

Santiago appeals to customers seeking a relaxed, social dining experience, with an emphasis on authenticity. The unique draw is their ability to combine a traditional Spanish dining environment with the added convenience of a delicatessen, where customers can purchase key Spanish ingredients to recreate dishes at home. This setup caters to both diners looking for an in-house experience and those wanting to engage with Spanish cuisine from the comfort of their home.

The dining model encourages customers to order tapas and ración portions as they go, promoting a flexible, social dining environment—mirroring the informal, friendly spirit of Spanish mealtimes. This allows Santiago to stand out by not only serving food but also offering a cultural experience, which appeals to people wanting more than a traditional sit-down meal.

Revenue Streams and Business Model

Santiago has diversified revenue streams that capitalize on both dining and retail opportunities. Beyond its core restaurant operations, its shop and delicatessen provide another layer of customer engagement and monetization. By importing authentic Spanish products such as wine, bread, and other essentials, the business taps into a niche market of food enthusiasts and those craving authentic Spanish flavors.

The restaurant’s menu showcases ingredients sourced directly from Spain, and the shop’s diverse selection of Spanish wines—over 100 varieties from different regions—adds further appeal. This multi-faceted approach allows Santiago to create a holistic brand experience, with in-store purchases likely increasing customer loyalty and driving repeat visits.

Operational Strengths and Challenges

Santiago’s family-run structure is a core strength, as it lends authenticity and personal connection to the brand’s story. The restaurant’s atmosphere is designed to be welcoming and laid-back, much like the Spanish establishments that inspired it. This personal touch, along with the family’s genuine love for Spanish culture, contributes to a strong brand identity.

However, operating in a smaller town like Buxton could pose challenges in terms of maintaining consistent foot traffic outside peak tourist or weekend periods. The ability to attract local repeat business through events, special offers, or Spanish-themed evenings could help stabilize revenue flows during quieter times.

Future Growth and Potential

Looking ahead, Santiago could explore opportunities for growth through expanding its online presence, possibly offering its deli products through an e-commerce platform to tap into a broader market. Additionally, partnerships with local businesses, events such as wine tastings or Spanish cooking classes, and an increased focus on social media marketing could further enhance brand visibility.

Overall, Santiago is well-positioned to thrive by combining authentic Spanish food with a multi-revenue business model, allowing it to stand out in Buxton’s hospitality sector. Its emphasis on culture, social dining, and quality imports makes it a unique offering in the local market.

The Museum of Curiosities, based in Nottingham, is a niche business that taps into the growing fascination with the macabre, paranormal, and unusual. As a business analyst, understanding its unique positioning within the entertainment and cultural sectors reveals the strategic value of niche attractions in today’s market.

Market Appeal and Target Audience

The museum appeals to a specific audience—enthusiasts of the strange and paranormal, including tourists and locals. Its collection features thousands of unusual and sometimes shocking items, such as human skulls, haunted objects, and taxidermy. This macabre allure positions it to cater to fans of true crime, horror, and paranormal activities, all of which have seen a surge in popular culture in recent years. This gives the Museum of Morbid Curiosities an edge in attracting visitors who seek non-traditional experiences beyond typical historical or art museums.

In terms of geographical positioning, Nottingham itself is a city with a rich history, which adds to the authenticity and curiosity factor of the museum. Located on Derby Road, its proximity to major transport links and other local attractions boosts its accessibility, further encouraging foot traffic. Nottingham’s student population and the growing demand for unique experiential tourism strengthen the museum’s core audience.

Business Model and Revenue Streams

The museum’s business model is multifaceted. Its primary revenue stream is through standard admissions, offering visitors a self-guided or staff-assisted tour of the museum’s four floors of exhibits. To supplement this, the museum hosts special tours, such as the After Hours VIP Tours, which provide a more exclusive experience. This tiered pricing model maximizes per-visitor revenue by catering to different customer segments—those looking for a standard visit versus individuals desiring a more in-depth, private experience.

A potential growth area is the development of merchandise. While no explicit mention is made of gift shop sales, memorabilia related to haunted or paranormal artifacts could form a lucrative additional revenue stream. Similarly, partnerships with paranormal societies, horror film enthusiasts, or even influencer collaborations in the gothic subculture could expand visibility and visitor engagement.

Operational Challenges and Opportunities

One of the museum’s key strengths lies in its adaptability. As its collection continues to grow, it can constantly refresh its exhibits, creating opportunities for repeat visits. In the long term, ensuring that the museum maintains relevance will require a focus on creating new exhibits, hosting events, and potentially developing educational programs.

However, the business faces operational challenges typical of niche museums, including fluctuating visitor numbers outside of peak tourism seasons. While the museum may see strong visitor numbers during Halloween or similar holidays, balancing out foot traffic throughout the year could prove challenging. Offering collaborative events, temporary exhibits, or partnerships with local businesses can help mitigate this.

Future Outlook

The Museum of Morbid Curiosities is well-positioned to grow, especially as interest in alternative tourism and experiential activities increases. By leveraging Nottingham’s historical backdrop, expanding its merchandise line, and capitalizing on emerging trends in paranormal and horror entertainment, the museum could continue to attract both tourists and local repeat visitors. With strategic marketing and an enhanced digital presence, it has the potential to become a flagship attraction for the region’s alternative tourism scene.

In conclusion, the Museum of Morbid Curiosities exemplifies how niche businesses can carve out a successful and profitable position by catering to unique interests and adapting to market trends.

Global Brands, a Chesterfield-based drinks supplier, has been awarded a £100,000 grant from the Clay Cross Town Deal’s Low Carbon Challenge Fund to advance its sustainability initiatives. The funding will support the company’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and work towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The grant will enable Global Brands to implement several energy-efficient technologies at its Clay Cross distribution centre. These upgrades include the installation of energy-efficient lighting, the introduction of battery storage to harness solar power, and the establishment of an onsite Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuelling station. These initiatives are expected to significantly reduce emissions from the company’s distribution operations.

Global Brands is aiming for a 40% reduction in emissions per £M turnover by 2030, with an ultimate goal of a 92% reduction by 2050. The company has already taken steps towards sustainability, with over half of its warehouse energy now generated by solar panels and a plan to switch its entire logistics fleet to zero-carbon by 2050.

Shaun Bacon, group managing and financial director at Global Brands, emphasised the importance of the investment, stating that adopting energy-efficient solutions and alternative fuels is essential for reducing the company’s environmental impact. He expressed hopes that the company’s actions would inspire other businesses in the community to pursue similar sustainability goals.

The grant is part of a broader initiative by the North East Derbyshire District Council’s Low Carbon Challenge Fund, which supports businesses in transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Lee Barned, chair of the Clay Cross Town Board, praised the ease of the grant process and the positive impact it is having on local businesses’ sustainability journeys.

Today West Midlands Business News will be taking a look at the hospitality sector. Now Stoke-on-Trent may not be a destination most people would think of for a weekend getaway or an idyllic countryside retreat but as a matter of fact, there are actually a lot of hidden gems in The Potteries. Away from the noise and foot traffic of places like Hanely Town Centre and Newcastle under Lyme are some fantastic little countryside hotels and spas and today we will be focusing on The Tawny Hotel.

Located in the heart of the English countryside, this deconstructed hotel offers a unique blend of traditional hospitality and private country escape. They state on their company website that the hotel “captures the essence of a classic hotel experience, combining a fabulous restaurant, room service, guest facilities, and a heated outdoor pool, all within a personal retreat”.

A Beautiful Location

The Tawny invites guests to relax in nature. The surrounding landscape has many woodland areas, and lakeside gardens and offers guests over 70 acres of exploration. Guests can enjoy outdoor baths under starlit skies, picnics, relaxed meals with stunning views, and the comfort of uniquely designed rooms. As we mentioned previously if you are not from The Midlands or the local area this abundance of nature and tranquillity may come as a surprise to many readers, but for locals, the local country has always been one of the most valued things about living in and around Staffordshire.

Unique Accommodation

One of the Tawny Hotels’ unique selling points is its rooms and accommodation. As we mentioned previously this is a deconstructed hotel so it breaks away from the norm when housing its guests. Instead of a traditional hotel setting what’s on offer here is a selection of different styles of accommodation tailored to the experience a guest would like on request.
