It’s friday so as usual Midlands Business News has taken the time to bring you some of the week’s most interesting stories and wrap them up in one nice digestibale package for our lovely readers. The start of the year as expected has been slow, but now we are coming into the second half of January things have started to pick up. Let’s take a look at this week’s most interesting stories.

Shaftesbury Casino in Dudley Performing Better Than Predicted

Shaftesbury Casino launched in Dudley last following a major refurbishment of the Castle Hill venue, previously owned by Genting. There were concerns when the venue first opened its doors it may face stiff competition form the number of people using live casino online websites, but it seems the venue is exceeding expectations. Situated near Dudley Zoo and Castle, the casino now offers live poker, blackjack, and roulette, alongside a refreshed façade and entertainment programme.

There was some pushback from from the local community over the project but overall it seems like it has been a boon for the local area. Of course, responsible gambling is always encouraged. General Manager Charles Griffin spoke when the venue first opened and stated the venue aims to project, but become a regional entertainment hub, featuring live performances, sports screenings, and a safe gaming experience. Guests at the grand opening event received complimentary gaming vouchers.

George Adams: Historic Pork Pie Manufacturer Enters Administration

The collapse of George Adams, a Lincolnshire-based artisan food manufacturer, has resulted in 42 job losses. Established in 1910 by George Adams in Spalding, the business grew from a butcher chain to a large-scale food manufacturer specialising in pies, sausages, and cooked meats.

The company was sold in 2007 by Mark Adams, the founder’s grandson, to Danish Crown’s UK subsidiary, Tulip, alongside five production facilities and 2,000 staff. Despite its historic legacy, the manufacturer has now ceased operations.

Brewhouse & Kitchen in Nottingham Listed for Over £1 Million

A popular Nottingham bar and restaurant, Brewhouse & Kitchen, located on Trent Bridge, has been listed for sale with a price tag exceeding £1 million.

The venue offers four open-plan areas seating 180 people, a first-floor function facility for 150 guests, and a riverside terrace accommodating 400 people. Christie & Co is marketing the property as a virtual freehold, attracting interest from pub operators and casual dining businesses.

Birmingham Welcomes New Office Tenant on New Street

Finally, a Dutch software company Total Specific Solutions has secured a three-year lease for office space in The White House on New Street, marking its second office in Birmingham. The lettings reflect continued business growth in Birmingham’s city centre.

The Birmingham Tech scene has seen some rapid growth over the last 5 years and this latest development will be seen as another feather in the second city’s cap. More job opportunities for the city are always welcome, and as more major companies flock to Birmingham the sky seems to be the limit.

BoyleSports’ recent acquisition of Wilf Gilbert marks a significant step in the Irish operator’s strategic entry into the UK retail market. The Midlands region, with its vibrant business ecosystem, provides an ideal foothold for BoyleSports’ ambitions. This move not only strengthens their presence but also brings new opportunities to local economies.

In an era where strategic expansion is crucial for survival and growth, BoyleSports has made a decisive move by acquiring Wilf Gilbert. The acquisition represents a deliberate step into the UK’s competitive retail market, with the Midlands serving as a pivotal area. Known for its robust economy and thriving business communities, the region presents ample opportunities for BoyleSports to leverage its expertise and expand its customer base. Furthermore, the integration of iGaming allows for new revenue streams where online players can, for example, turn Champions League betting odds into high ROI potential and provide a unique edge in enhancing their market appeal.

BoyleSports’ Acquisition of Wilf Gilbert

The acquisition of Wilf Gilbert is more than just an expansion; it is a strategic alignment with one of the Midlands’ most reputable businesses. Wilf Gilbert has established a strong presence in the region, known for its reliable services and loyal customer base. This acquisition allows BoyleSports to tap into an existing network while introducing its own brand of innovation and customer service excellence.

The significance of this deal extends beyond mere market entry. For BoyleSports, it represents a strategic foothold in a competitive landscape dominated by established players. By acquiring Wilf Gilbert, they inherit not only physical locations but also valuable insights into regional consumer behavior and preferences. This knowledge will be instrumental in tailoring their offerings to meet local demands effectively.

Moreover, this move is part of a broader strategy to diversify and strengthen BoyleSports’ market position across various sectors. By capitalizing on Wilf Gilbert’s local reputation and combining it with their own extensive experience, BoyleSports aims to create a formidable presence in the Midlands.

Impact on the Midlands Business Landscape

The ripple effect of this acquisition will likely be felt across the Midlands’ business ecosystem. For local businesses, the entry of a major player like BoyleSports can bring increased foot traffic and economic activity. Additionally, there is potential for job creation as BoyleSports expands its operations to accommodate growing demand and service excellence standards.

This influx of new jobs could contribute significantly to reducing unemployment rates in the area, providing much-needed opportunities for local residents. Furthermore, as BoyleSports invests in upgrading facilities and enhancing customer experiences, other businesses in the vicinity may benefit from increased patronage and collaboration opportunities.

In economic terms, BoyleSports’ investment signals confidence in the region’s growth potential. By choosing to enter through the Midlands, they acknowledge the area’s strategic importance within the UK’s broader economic framework. This decision could encourage further investments from other sectors looking to capitalize on the region’s strengths.

Navigating the Competitive Market

The UK market is notoriously competitive, with numerous operators vying for consumer attention and loyalty. In such an environment, differentiation is key. BoyleSports may employ several strategies to carve out its niche, focusing on tailored promotions and leveraging its comprehensive online platform to enhance customer engagement.

A unique selling point could be their emphasis on iGaming and betting, appealing to football fans who are deeply invested in international tournaments. By offering competitive odds and promotions tied to these events, BoyleSports can attract a dedicated audience seeking value-added experiences.

Moreover, integrating innovative technologies such as mobile apps and live streaming could further enhance their appeal. These tools provide customers with convenient access to options while allowing them to stay engaged with real-time sports action—a crucial factor in retaining interest and building brand loyalty.

Regulatory Considerations and Challenges

Navigating the UK regulatory landscape poses both challenges and opportunities for new entrants like BoyleSports. The country maintains stringent regulations governing operations, ensuring consumer protection and fair play across all platforms.

BoyleSports must diligently adhere to these regulations while ensuring compliance at every level of operation—from advertising standards to responsible initiatives. This requires robust internal processes and ongoing staff training programs designed specifically around compliance requirements.

However, meeting these challenges head-on can also position BoyleSports as a responsible operator committed to industry standards—a reputation that resonates positively with consumers seeking trustworthy providers amid increasing scrutiny over ethical practices within business circles.

Future Prospects and Industry Trends

The future looks promising for BoyleSports as they continue expanding their footprint within the UK’s vibrant landscape. With strategic investments planned across various channels—both offline through retail outlets like those acquired from Wilf Gilbert—and online via digital platforms—their prospects appear bright indeed.

Industry trends indicate growing consumer preference for online solutions due largely to convenience factors combined with enhanced user experiences offered by modern technologies such as virtual reality (VR) integrations or augmented reality (AR) applications tailored specifically towards enthusiasts who crave immersive engagements beyond traditional formats alone!

This shift towards digitalization presents exciting possibilities not only for operators like BoyleSports but also consumers eager to explore new dimensions within entertainment realms previously unimaginable just a few years ago!

Pharmaceutical packaging is currently undergoing a makeover, and it’s not just about aesthetics. With climate change at the forefront of global concerns, industries of all kinds, are stepping up their game. Packaging might not be the hero we talk about often, but it plays a vital role in both healthcare and protecting our planet.

Curious about how the pharmaceutical world is tackling sustainability challenges without compromising safety or functionality? Let’s break down the innovative ways this industry is going green while staying true to its purpose.

The Shift to Sustainable Pharmaceutical Packaging

1. From Plastics to Bioplastics

Traditional plastics have dominated pharmaceutical packaging for decades due to their durability and affordability. Enter bioplastics, made from renewable sources like cornstarch or sugarcane, these materials are biodegradable and significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Many companies are already rolling out bioplastic packaging for over-the-counter medicines and prescription drugs, ensuring the packaging still meets all safety and sterility requirements while being kinder to the planet.

2. Reducing Packaging Waste

Raise your hand if you’ve opened a box and found unnecessary layers of packaging—think stickers, inserts, multilayer boxes, and unnecessary wrappers. Fortunately, companies are catching on to the idea that less is more.

New designs focus on simplifying packaging without jeopardising product integrity. By removing redundant layers or shrinking box sizes, pharmaceutical giants are not only reducing material use but also improving transport efficiency (fewer materials = smaller loads = lesser emissions).

3. Recyclable Innovations

Not all pharmaceutical packaging can be composted or biodegraded. However, designing packaging that’s 100% recyclable is a practical step forward. For example:

  • Mono-material Blisters: Traditional blister packs have a mix of materials like aluminium and PVC, making them non-recyclable. Innovators are now opting for blister packs made purely of one recyclable material, such as aluminium or PET.
  • Recyclable Paper Labels and Boxes: From product instructions to outer cartons, switching to sustainably sourced and recyclable paper is another way to reduce impact.

4. Glass Makes a Comeback

Call it a comeback, or simply a sustainable classic. For years, glass has been eclipsed by lightweight plastics. But as an endlessly recyclable material, glass is being increasingly used for pharmaceutical packaging once again, especially for products that require airtight, sterile solutions such as vials, ampoules, and syringes.

Additionally, advancements ensure modern glass is lighter and shatter-resistant, answering concerns about transport and safety while keeping sustainability goals in check.

5. Closed-Loop Systems

One powerful concept gaining traction in pharmaceutical packaging is the closed-loop system. This means that packaging materials are retrieved, processed, and reused, over and over.

For instance, pharmaceutical bottles and containers can be collected from consumers or healthcare centres, cleaned, sterilised, and reused by manufacturers. Closed-loop systems dramatically cut waste generation and encourage a circular economy.

The Role of Regulations and Industry Policies

Many sustainability efforts in pharma packaging are driven by stringent policies and international regulations. The European Green Deal, for example, mandates that all packaging in the EU must be reusable or recyclable by 2030.

What does this mean for packaging? Companies at the forefront are treating regulations as an opportunity to improve business models while appealing to eco-conscious consumers.

What’s Next for Sustainable Medicine Packaging?

The path to sustainability is a process. More research, investment, and collaboration will be key to building a sustainable pharmaceutical packaging industry.

We can expect innovation in:

  • Advanced biodegradable materials
  • Fully circular supply chains
  • More digital healthcare functionalities to reduce packaging usage

Turn Medicine into a Planet-Friendly Mission

Sustainability is reshaping pharmaceutical packaging. It’s about innovation without compromise, proving that health and environmental wellness go hand-in-hand.

HS2 Chairman to Step Down Amid Rising Costs and Leadership Changes

Sir Jon Thompson, chairman of HS2 Ltd, will step down from his role next year, following nearly four years of involvement with the UK’s largest rail project. Thompson, who initially joined as a non-executive director in April 2021, was appointed chair in February 2023. Later that year, he assumed the role of executive chair in September after the resignation of former chief executive Mark Thurston.

HS2 Ltd has confirmed that the search for Thompson’s replacement will begin soon. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander acknowledged Thompson’s contributions, highlighting his leadership during challenging periods for the project. “I want to thank Sir Jon for his work over nearly four years to progress Britain’s largest rail project,” Alexander said, adding that the new leadership will focus on managing budgets and schedules to ensure cost-effective delivery for both passengers and taxpayers.

Thompson’s professional journey began in local government, followed by roles within the Civil Service, including stints at Ofsted, the Department for Education, and the Ministry of Defence. He previously held chief executive positions at HMRC and the Financial Reporting Council.

Thompson’s departure coincides with growing concerns about HS2’s escalating costs. Confidential government documents, reported by the Financial Times, revealed that the budget for the London Euston section has surpassed £7.5bn. The National Audit Office (NAO) had already revised its cost estimate for the station to £4.8bn in 2023. A Department for Transport (DfT) document, labelled “official – sensitive: commercial,” suggests overall HS2 construction costs could rise by an additional £9bn, pushing the project’s total to approximately £66bn. An upcoming DfT report is expected to outline figures between £54bn and £66bn, based on a June 2023 HS2 board paper.

Indurent Secures Approval for Major Industrial Development in Staffordshire

Meanwhile, in Staffordshire, property developer Indurent has secured planning approval for a significant 385,000 sq ft industrial and logistics development. The project forms part of the 127-acre Uttoxeter SUE scheme and will include two units—one measuring 300,000 sq ft and the other 85,000 sq ft.

The development aligns with Indurent’s sustainable building principles, targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and an EPC A or A+ rating. Both units will feature high-spec office spaces and flexible industrial layouts.

The broader scheme, which received outline planning consent in 2022, will include 4.6 hectares of employment land, up to 162 homes, and landscaped areas. Indurent Park Uttoxeter is projected to generate 580 full-time jobs, along with 160 construction roles.

Jessica Evans, senior planning manager at Indurent, described the project as a significant economic driver for the region. “The development will create over 700 jobs across construction and operational phases, providing modern, sustainable workspaces for industrial, distribution, and high-growth sectors like advanced manufacturing.”

Indurent’s expansion is part of a wider initiative to boost the West Midlands’ economy, creating long-term employment and contributing to regional growth.

Multimillion-Pound Boost for Affordable Housing in Digbeth

A major residential project in Digbeth, Birmingham, is set to receive a significant financial boost from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). While the final amount is still under negotiation, WMCA has confirmed a “multimillion-pound investment” into the development, which will introduce 481 apartments to the area.

The project, led by Latimer, the development arm of Clarion Housing Group, will transform derelict land off Clyde Street. Over half of the apartments (55%) are designated as affordable housing, including 141 homes earmarked for social rent. The development consists of two interconnected buildings, standing at ten and 34 storeys, and will feature five commercial units and a pocket park.

The initiative aligns with Mayor Richard Parker’s ‘Homes for Everyone’ plan, launched in September, which aims to accelerate the construction of social and affordable housing across the West Midlands. Mayor Parker highlighted the importance of the project, describing it as the “first step in delivering thousands of social homes.”

“For too long, investment in social housing has been neglected, leaving people without the safe, affordable homes they deserve. I’m determined to change that,” Parker said. “Rebuilding our social housing stock not only provides homes for those who need them most but also creates jobs and drives economic growth.”

In line with sustainable living goals, all apartments will be powered by solar panels and heat pumps, aiming to lower energy costs for residents. WMCA’s approval paves the way for detailed negotiations with Latimer to finalise the investment.

Frasers Group Acquires Land for Mega Headquarters in Ansty

In another major development, Frasers Group has secured a 278-acre site in Ansty, near Coventry, for its new global headquarters. The retail giant acquired the land from Harworth Group in a £53.5 million deal following planning approval from Rugby Borough Council.

Frasers Group plans to relocate from its current headquarters in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, consolidating its warehouse operations at the new site. Designed by renowned architects Grimshaw, the site will feature office headquarters, concept retail and R&D facilities, leisure spaces, and a gym designed for real-time equipment testing. Additional amenities will include a 100-room hotel, a 750-seat auditorium, retail and dining options, and a mobility hub.

The ambitious project will also provide 80 residential units and five logistics buildings covering over 252,000 square feet. The development is expected to generate 7,680 jobs and contribute £69 million in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the local economy.

Lynda Shillaw, Chief Executive at Harworth, emphasised the collaborative efforts that made the deal possible. “The Ansty transaction highlights our expertise in strategic land assembly. Collaboration with stakeholders has enabled us to accelerate the delivery of this site,” Shillaw said. “This deal, alongside our recent land sale to Microsoft, marks the end of an exciting year for Harworth.”

Harworth intends to reinvest proceeds from the sale into infrastructure and other development projects within its industrial and logistics pipeline.

A Positive Outlook for the Region

These developments mark significant milestones in housing and economic growth for the West Midlands and Coventry areas. With large-scale residential and commercial projects moving forward, both regions are set to benefit from job creation, housing expansion, and sustainable growth initiatives in the coming years.

The Coventry site, which covers 2.3 acres and includes four drive-through workshop bays, will transition to RHCV management from November 1, 2024. The Coventry facility offers a range of services including truck and LCV maintenance, 24/7 breakdown assistance, a Used Trucks centre, and a Tachograph Centre.

This acquisition follows RHCV’s recent developments, including a purpose-built workshop in Nottingham (2019), the expansion of its Northampton depot (completed in September 2024), and the launch of RHCVan in spring 2024 to provide van services.

Nigel Baxter, RHCV’s managing director, expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating that it strengthens the company’s position as a leading independent distributor within the Renault Trucks Network. He welcomed the Coventry team into the RHCV family, emphasising the continued growth and success of the business since 2012.

Today we are going to take a look at a more friendly option for our business in focus piece. I used to love laser tag as a child and have many fond memories of playing Quazar at my local Ten Pin bowling alley. Now it seems there is a place in Derby that has taken this experience to another level. So all you big kids (and regular ones) will probably enjoy reading all about this one.

HELiOS Pro Laser-Tag at Megazone: An Immersive Experience

HELiOS Pro Laser-Tag at Megazone is an action-packed futuristic laser-tag game played within a 4,000 sq. ft. multi-level arena, featuring labyrinths, mazes, swirling smoke, and some very eerie music that sets the tone and gets your heart racing. Super-bright green lasers pierce through the ultraviolet (UV) themed setting, creating an immersive environment where players, armed with only a laser gun, are tasked with surviving as they are hunted. It’s suitable for anyone aged six and above, though younger children may also enjoy the game. It’s worth having parents there for the younger ones as it could be a little scary for smaller children.

Events and Group Gatherings at Megazone

Megazone provides the perfect venue for a variety of events, including:

  • Birthday parties
  • Group outings for clubs, schools, and sports teams
  • Corporate team-building events
  • Family and friends gatherings
  • Student Activities
  • School holiday treats

Additional Facilities at Willows Sports Centre

Located within Willows Sports Centre in Derby, Megazone offers laser tag alongside indoor sports facilities, including football, futsal, cricket, and netball. The centre also has a fully licensed bar, lounge area, and changing rooms with hot showers and lockers. Parking is limited, so it is recommended to use nearby parking facilities during busy times.

Pre-Booking and Group Options

This place does get very busy, so Megazone encourages pre-booking, especially during weekends and school holidays due to the high demand. Groups can also book outside standard hours with prior notice, and this has been a known option for big kids and people at stag and hen parties. Trained, uniformed staff are always on hand to ensure your group’s safety and comfort, and first-aid employees are available as well, so you are always in a controlled environment. You and your party can just focus on the important part, shooting each other and having fun.

Party Food and Catering

Megazone provides a range of freshly prepared party food, including stone-baked pizza, chicken breast bites, fries, and unlimited squash or water. Dietary, allergen and cultural requirements can be catered for upon request.

Contact Information

For more information or to book, contact their wonderful team at 01332 204004.
