Rothera Dowson social media seminar gets businesses talking

A seminar designed to highlight both the legal implications and benefits of social media for businesses has raised £300 for charity. 

‘SMall Talk: Social Media and the Legal Landscape’ was hosted by Nottingham law firm Rothera Dowson at the city’s Curry Lounge restaurant and attracted an audience of over 50 delegates from the local business community.

Those attending were asked to pay a charitable donation on arrival, which will now be handed over to Nottingham’s Emmanuel House Day Centre, Rothera Dowson’s chosen charity for 2011.

The audience heard from four speakers, who all examined the use of social media from different viewpoints. 

Anton Balkitis, Rothera Dowson’s motoring law specialist, opened the event by sharing his positive experience of using Twitter and blogs to highlight his team’s expertise and personally engage with potential clients. 

He was followed by employment law expert John Buchanan who pointed out the legal risks of social media from an employer’s perspective, and commercial litigation solicitor Daniel Harley, with a presentation on handling defamatory comments made on social media channels.

The final speaker was Nik Hewitt from Conversify, one of the world’s most renowned social media consultancies. Nik discussed the etiquette of social media and also spoke about the procedure for online crisis management. 

Commenting on the seminar, Rothera Dowson’s managing partner Amanda Redgate said: 

“We were pleased to see such a high number of people from a variety of different sectors attending the event and learning from our speakers, while raising vital funds for Emmanuel House at the same time.

“Judging by the number of thank you tweets that we received via our Rothera Dowson Twitter account afterwards, it certainly seems that the audience engaged with the content of the seminar and are now putting best practice into action when it comes to social media for business.”
