Some of the UK’s biggest companies have descended on Birmingham City University to learn more about its expertise in applying technology to make businesses work even smarter.

Rolls Royce, the BBC and PricewaterhouseCoopers are among the blue chip names attending a business intelligence conference hosted by the University and organised with global enterprise application software company SAP for members of its special interest group.

Experts will be discussing their experiences of business intelligence at the conference held at the Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment’s campus at Millennium Point in Birmingham city centre.

Business intelligence refers to computer-based techniques used in identifying and analysing a range of business data in a bid to give organisations a competitive advantage.

Dr Peter Rayson, Associate Dean at the Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment (TEE) said attracting some of the biggest names in British business to the campus was a real coup and reflected the University’s leadership in applying technology to real world business needs.

“We are delighted to be hosting the event because SAP is one of our major industry partners,” added Dr Rayson.

“Business Intelligence is of major interest to the faculty and strongly connected to our expertise in mobile and cloud technology services.

“For instance, we have been working with cnaSoft a cloud computing developer and Econet Wireless  an African telecoms company to develop a system to help remote areas of Africa that have limited internet access, using a simple USB stick, which contains software, downloads applications which are provided remotely rather than from a local computer – often referred to as ‘cloud computing’.”

Conference speakers include representatives from Brother UK Ltd, BP and the event’s sponsor Bluefin Solutions. Issues being discussed include the future of In-Memory Analytics, HANA 1.0 and self service reporting.
