May 23, 2012

Local firms are being urged to learn more about Arabic language and culture to boost their export chances, at a free Business Arabic for beginners session on Friday 1 June at the Yew Lodge, Kegworth.

Organised by the government’s exporting body in the East Midlands, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), this is the first in a series of three Arabic training sessions to be held this year.

The session will cover things like meeting and greeting, negotiation techniques, tips on maintaining good business relationships and key words and phrases.

The course will be run by UKTI’s language and culture adviser for the East Midlands, Suzannah Hutton.

She said:

“The Middle East is a massive market for the region. Last years trade statistics showed over £1 billion in orders to the Middle East and North Africa, business is booming and there are a high number of opportunities on the horizon. For example Qatar will be investing tens of billions of pounds to develop its infrastructure over the next 10 years or so after its successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022, providing a real focal point for projects including rail and the New Doha Port.

“Having this bit of knowledge in cultural etiquette and language can go a long way when dealing with potential clients, putting local firms in an even stronger position to win new contracts.”

Rail firms can put their skills to the test on a UK Trade & Investment Market Visit to Abu Dhabi and Dubai from 10 to 13 June.

Gulf Rail 2012 will give local companies the chance to meet the key players, both procurement agencies and National Rail Operators, including Etihad Rail, Qatar Rail Development Company, SAR and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Public Works.
