A Staffordshire creative firm has created a touch of Hawaiian tropical magic in a nightclub in the centre of historic York – and in the process rescued a 38 year-old VW camper van with the help of a Lichfield accident repair shop.
Rugeley-based GMP Design has just completed a contract to revamp the biggest nightclub in the city, with a cutting-edge refurbishment. And the centre-piece of the refurb – conceived by GMP’s lead designer Jason Robinson – is a completely restored iconic VW camper van.
The 1974 van acquired for the job needed extensive re-building, and it was too big to go through the club entrances. So Lichfield Accident and Repair Centre stepped in to help.
The garage restored the van to its former glory before it cutting it in two. Once inside the club it was re-assembled and fitted out with nightclub-style seating to fit in with the new Hawaiian theme.
The Clifford Street club, previously known as The Gallery, has been renamed the Kuda Bar and Nightclub after the £350,000 refit by GMP.
GMP’s re-design involved transforming the 800-capacity club with a Tiki-style Hawaiian surfer beach treatment. As well as the VW camper van the refurbishment includes state-of-the-art lighting, illuminated sets and celebrity booths.
Jason Robinson said, “We were really keen to use the VW van as a strong element of the design. Unfortunately the one we bought was a bit of a wreck and needed extensive rebuilding. We are really grateful to Lichfield Accident Repair Centre who came to our rescue.”
Lichfield Accident Repair Centre, on the Crossfield Industrial Estate in Lichfield, is a 24-hour accident repair centre which also specialises in vehicle customisation and classic car restoration.
