What is Moasure?
Moasure is a privately-owned, Midlands-based technology company owned by inventor Alan Rock that specialises in measuring devices. The motion-based measuring tools like the Moasure ONE and Moasure 2 Series are the world’s first motion-based measuring tool. Moasure has revolutionised precise measurement of 3D space for industries such as landscaping, construction, and surveying. Moasure is based at the Warwick Innovation Centre and has won several awards.
How does Moasure work?
Moasure devices use high-performing inertial sensors to provide measurements. The sensors record changes in its position as it moves. Moasure devices, which are palm-sized, work via Bluetooth alongside an app, to measure things including distance, area and volume. The device requires a technique involving pace, placement, and rotation to ensure accuracy. The technology promises high accuracy and to save time.
Moasure promises to make difficult measuring easy. Rather than traditional tools leading to errors and guesswork when measuring complex shapes, Moasure’s technology promises to “simplify and streamline” work, without GPS of lasers.
The story of Moasure
Alan Rock, the founder and co-CEO of Moasure came up with the motion-based measuring technology in 2004. He faced challenges with traditional measuring tools while working on DIY projects at home and inspired by rocket guidance systems, imagined motion-sensing technology to use movement to calculate the measurements of 3D space. His vision was to create a small device that could measure difficult to measure spaces – creating a solution to a problem he had faced himself.
Alan Rock filed a patent for his idea, then spent 15 years working on it with a technical team. The Moasure ONE™ was launched in 2019, following successful crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, Alan then officially founded Moasure. Moasure is registered under the parent company of Moasure, 3D TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED, Innovation Centre Warwick Technology Park, Gallows Hill, Warwick, England, CV34 6UW, founded on June 20, 2014.
In 2019, Moasure shipped the Moasure ONE™ to 2,500 customers who had pre-ordered the unique product. The same year, Moasure won the Hottest Startup Award at annual trade show CES. Through 2020 and 2021, new features were added for Moasure ONE™ with updates to the app.
In 2022 and 2023, Moasure significant increased its international footprint, launched 11 global websites to reach customers in key markets such as Australia, Canada and Germany. Moasure says it now ships its products to 92 countries worldwide. During this time the Moasure app was updated with Volume and 3D Terrain features.
Moasure 2 Series launch
In July 2024, Moasure introduced a new generation of motion-based measuring devices, including Moasure 2 and Moasure 2 PRO. According to Moasure: “Following Moasure ONE’s worldwide success, the Moasure 2 Series builds on the groundbreaking capabilities of the pioneering first-generation product, and benefits from several technological enhancements, such as: improved measurement accuracy, enhanced battery life, USB-C charging, and more. Moasure 2 PRO also features exclusive Layout mode, allowing users to accurately set out points based on existing Moasure files or inputted coordinates.”
The company says: “The Moasure 2 Series launch is one of the company’s most significant achievements to date, underpinned by a dedication to technological innovation and user satisfaction.”
Moasure Key Features
According Moasure’s website, the technology allows people to measure and draw at the same time, generate accurate dimensioned drawings while you move, calculate areas and perimeters, and automatically calculate the square footage and perimeter of a measured area. It also captures elevation as you move, measure elevation, determine grade, calculate rise and run, and can map 3D terrain and calculate volume. Moasure has the ability to generate 3D terrain maps, calculate true surface area, volume, and contour lines. Moasure users can then export to DWG, PDF & CSV and share measurements with clients, colleagues or your favorite design software.
The benefits of Moasure include time-saving because it is faster than traditional measuring, accuracy because the technology reduces errors, portability because there is no bulky equipment and versatility because works indoors/outdoors, in tricky terrain.
Moasure can be used for landscaping and garden design, construction and site surveys, flooring, paving, and decking and sports field marking.
Moasure Success
Moasure promises fast and accurate measurement. According to an April 2024 study of 1,739 experienced Moasure users, 62% reported a reduction in hours spent measuring per week. According to the Moasure website, 110,000+ units have been sold worldwide
